Lin Zhong 钟林

I study how large language models represent, reason about, and align with human cognitive states in social contexts.

I am a Ph.D. student in the School of Computer Science and Technology and the Research Institute of Cyberspace Security at Harbin Institute of Technology, Shenzhen, advised by Prof. Qing Liao. My research connects LLMs, agents, and cognitive modeling, with a focus on social behavior prediction, cognitive-state modeling, emotional support dialogue, and privacy-preserving recommendation.

Research Agenda

From cognitive states to socially grounded intelligence

My long-term goal is to build language agents that do not merely imitate surface text, but maintain useful internal representations of human cognitive states and use them for socially grounded reasoning and interaction.

01 Represent

Model emotions, stances, intentions, thinking styles, and other socially meaningful cognitive signals.

02 Reason

Use structured reasoning and multi-agent interaction to support social understanding and prediction.

03 Apply

Apply cognitive modeling to emotional support dialogue, recommendation, and social behavior prediction.

Modeling Multi-Dimensional Cognitive States in LLMs under Cognitive Crowding

Lin Zhong, Yuxuan Zhang, Huiyu Zhang, Guisheng Yin, Qing Liao

Proposes a cognitively grounded benchmark and modeling framework for analyzing how LLMs represent multiple simultaneous cognitive states, especially when social signals crowd or interfere with each other.

ACL 2026 Main Preprint

Cognitive Policy-Driven LLM for Diagnosis and Intervention of Cognitive Distortions in Emotional Support Conversation

Lin Zhong, Renjin Zhu, Shujuan Ma, Jinhao Cui, Lingzhi Wang, Hao Chen, Qing Liao

Constructs CogBiasESC and proposes CoPoLLM to diagnose cognitive distortions in help-seeker utterances and guide safer, deeper cognitive interventions in emotional support dialogue.

CoMaPOI: A Collaborative Multi-Agent Framework for Next POI Prediction Bridging the Gap Between Trajectory and Language

Lin Zhong, Lingzhi Wang, Xu Yang, Qing Liao

Introduces a collaborative multi-agent framework that converts trajectory signals into language, narrows the candidate POI space, and improves next-location prediction with specialized agents.

COLING 2025 Federated Recommendation

FedCSR: A Federated Framework for Multi-Platform Cross-Domain Sequential Recommendation with Dual Contrastive Learning

Dongyi Zheng, Hongyu Zhang, Jianyang Zhai, Lin Zhong, Lingzhi Wang, Jiyuan Feng, Xiangke Liao, Yonghong Tian, Nong Xiao, Qing Liao

FedHCDR: Federated Cross-Domain Recommendation with Hypergraph Signal Decoupling

Hongyu Zhang, Dongyi Zheng, Lin Zhong, Xu Yang, Jiyuan Feng, Yunqing Feng, Qing Liao

Uses hypergraph signal decoupling for federated cross-domain recommendation, improving how heterogeneous user-item signals are transferred across domains without centralizing private data.

ICASSP 2026 Federated Learning

PGFed: Prompt-Guided Distillation for Personalized Federated Learning with Model Heterogeneity

Xu Yang, Jiyuan Feng, Lin Zhong, Lingzhi Wang, Binxin Fang, Qing Liao

Explores prompt-guided distillation for personalized federated learning under model heterogeneity, aiming to improve cross-client knowledge transfer without forcing a single model architecture.

Published Themes

How my published work connects

Cognitive States

Multi-dimensional cognitive modeling

Studies how LLMs represent emotion, stance, thinking style, and intention, and how representation spaces affect joint cognitive-state understanding.

Emotional Support

Cognitive distortion diagnosis and intervention

Builds cognitive-policy-driven LLMs for emotional support dialogue, with attention to distortion diagnosis, intervention strategy, and safety-aware response generation.

Collaborative Agents

Language agents for next-POI prediction

Designs specialized agents that bridge trajectory data and language reasoning for user mobility and next-location prediction.

Federated Learning

Recommendation and personalization under privacy constraints

Develops federated recommendation and personalized learning methods for cross-domain, multi-platform, and heterogeneous-client settings.
